Media Resources Transforms Yonge and Dundas in Toronto

Media Resources Inc. Builds and Installs Canada’s Largest Digital LED Display – Again.

Oakville, Ontario – June 22nd, 2017 – Media Resources Inc, an integrated sign services and manufacturing company in Oakville, Ontario has recently completed a build and install of one of the largest single screen LED displays in Canada.

The massive LED display is a stunning three sided curved display that measures 26 feet high and over 188 feet long.  The screen can be seen atop the future flagship location of Shoppers Drug Mart at Yonge and Dundas Square in Toronto, Ontario.  The project included building a new steel support structure on the heritage building, fabrication of the LED display at the Media Resources headquarters in Oakville, Ontario and installing the display.

Astral Out of Home, the outdoor advertising division of Bell Media selected Media Resources from a number of other companies who all pitched for the RFP in 2016.

Kevin Martens, Director of Construction with Astral Out of Home says, “We selected Media Resources as we felt they were the best company to take the project from concept to completion. We worked with them hand in hand on the design, through to the final installation to meet our deadline. Overall our clients were very satisfied with the impact and overall appearance of the display.  Many partners were involved to complete this project on time which required a great team effort by everyone.

Prior to this LED display, Media Resources also built and installed another of the largest LED displays in Canada at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls.  The Fallsview sign is 4500 sq. feet, 3 Sided with full motion LED displays and measures up at 130 feet tall by 20 feet wide.

The Yonge and Dundas Digital LED Roof-scape uses a 10mm SMD product having almost 4.7 million pixels and provides advertisers with the ability to display video as well as static images.

Jeff Rushton, Co-Owner, President and CEO of Media Resources states: “We are delighted to have been selected by Astral on this exciting project.  Both the technology used in the sign, the size of the display, the curved corner design and the location of the sign all make it one of, if not the landmark digital display in Canada and one of the top displays in the world. As one of the owners of Media Resources, I am most proud of the employees from all of our divisions who came together to engineer, manufacture, and install this world class digital display.  We are very proud of the effort they put in.”

Media Resources Selected to Install Iconic Toronto Sam the Record Man Sign

Media Resources Selected as Subcontractor to Install Iconic Toronto Sam the Record Man Sign.

Media Resources of Oakville, Ontario is very excited to announce that we have been selected by our friends at Sunset Neon as their subcontractor to install the iconic Sam the Record Man sign at Yonge & Dundas Square in Toronto in 2017.

One of many iconic signs that Toronto has been known for, the two large neon spinning lights are a part of Toronto history much like The El Mocambo neon palm tree, Honest Ed’s and Massey Hall.

The sign was taken down following the closing of Sam the Record Man and eventually placed into storage by Ryerson University.

On January 18, 2008, Ryerson University acquired the property for future expansion of its nearby campus. On October 4, 2008, the iconic neon signs were lit for the last time as part of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche festivities. The removal of the signage commenced shortly after the final lighting, and by mid-March 2009 the building had been partially demolished. About a year after the lighting of the records at Nuit Blanche, demolition of the structure began. The building was demolished in early 2010.  The new Ryerson Student Learning Centre (SLC) opened on February 23, 2015 on the old Sam’s site.

Under a heritage preservation deal with the city, Ryerson was expected to restore the spinning record signs and incorporate them into the new Student Learning Centre on the former Sam’s site. However, the university later stated that the signs were not compatible with their designs for the new building.  In July 2014, City Council approved a revised agreement with Ryerson, whereby the university would pay to install and maintain the sign atop a city-owned building at 277 Victoria St., two blocks southeast of the original location.

On Wednesday March 8th it was announced that Ryerson has selected Sunset Neon to manage the restoration and installation of the sign atop a city owned building at Yonge and Dundas Square.

Benefits of 3D Fabrication for Businesses in Marketing

Benefits of 3D Fabrication for Businesses in Marketing

At the mention of the term ‘3D’, what comes to most people’s minds is the thought of movies. But what most don’t know is that the 3D movement has also swept into the business world. In fact, it has been in existence for way longer than 3D movies. In what way you ask? Well, businesses are using 3D fabrication in making business signage and in marketing activities such as trade show displays, product launches, experiential marketing and more. The movement has also stretched into theaters and to TV/movie screens where it is used to make props of all shapes and sizes

As a business owner, theater owner, movie producer or advertising and media executive, you should consider using 3D fabrication in your marketing and this is why:

Advertising Outside of the Box

As you walk down the streets of any city today, there are loads and loads of posters and billboards all fighting for your attention. The window stores, bus parks, building walls; they are all crammed with marketing material. As a business owner who is looking to have your business known, you do not want your marketing strategy to be in the same line as other businesses. Yours needs to go against the current and what better way than through 3D fabrication of your signage, your message or your product? This way, any pedestrian walking down the street is bound to have their interest captured and you will have beaten your competition and captured the attention of many.

Your Billboard Message stands out, clearly

For every business started nowadays, there will be several that will emerge to compete with the initial one. For that reason, there is the need to have a strategy where your business stands out from the rest, especially when it comes to marketing. The solution to this problem is Custom 3D fabrication in Marketing, Advertising and Promotions. Business owners have stated that once they adopted 3D signage, their businesses registered an increase in clients or got more attention. This is because it makes the brand stand out and it’s memorable.

Product launches

Business owners have also benefited from 3D fabrication when launching products. This is because 3D fabrication produces a lifelike replica of whatever product one wants made. This way, when a product is being launched, people get to see a replica of the exact product as opposed to a miniature version of it. 3D fabrication also reduces the risk of handling the real product especially if it is delicate.  3D Fabrication allows the advertiser to get creative and present the product in any way, shape or form.

Theater props, Movie Props, Museum Displays and so much more…

Live production theaters are also benefiting from 3D fabrication. Earlier on, theater owners spent a lot of money in buying props which sometimes did not even meet their expectations. However, now they can have 3D props which are exact to the expectations they want.  No matter what the production is, every theater production needs props and Media Resources has just the machines and the artists needed to create whatever your production needs.

Similar for television and movie sets, props are a huge part of any film production for the big screen or the small screen.  Media Resources can build anything from the smallest to the largest props for your science fiction movie to a drama, horror or comedy.  We can build large scale city scenes, galactic planets and spaceships to miniature cities…you name it and the 3D team at Media Resources can produce it.

More Examples of our use of 3D and Creativity on behalf of our clients:

Choose Media Resources for your Custom 3D Fabrication Needs for top results in your Marketing, Advertising, Promotional campaigns and 3D Props.

Media Resources has extensive experience in creative multi-dimensional 3D Signage, 3D Custom Fabrication and 3D Prop solutions to get your message and your campaign noticed. A simple 2D billboard extension can add incredible impact to your message.

A 3D sign execution goes the extra distance to make your brand and message really stand out. Our creative team at Media Resources has been at the forefront of custom 3D fabrication for over 30 years, from the days of custom metal fabrication to modeling, hand sculpting & forming. Now in 2016 Media Resources is again at the leading edge of technology & innovation with our 3D Carving & Sculpting capabilities. Sign Expo Canada 2016

Sign Expo Canada is the Sign Association of Canada’s National Trade-show that attracts exhibitors and prospects from all over the world to see all of the latest and greatest the Canadian sign industry has to offer.

By exhibiting at Sign Expo Canada we had the opportunity to educate, connect and be a part of an ever expanding Canadian audience, and to show off our newest technologies and products/services.

For 2016 we decided to go large with an impressive 20’x40′ booth that would showcase our capabilities in digital displays, large format print and 3D Fabrications.

We decided to go with a theme of “space” and utilize impressive and high quality imagery in print and on-screen.  The main feature of our booth was a massive 10’x20′ indoor LED screen with a pixel pitch of 3.9mm, with crystal clear images many attendees stood in awe wishing this could be in their basement.

Sign Expo Canada 2016-6

We also featured  3.9mm and 2.9mm LED screens on the inside, outside and rear of the booth to give a total sensory display for all who stopped by to visit.  For print, we featured a huge 10’x20′ vinyl graphic at the rear of the booth that outlined the entire 50 year history of Media Resources compared to the last 50 years of space exploration. We topped our booth off with self adhesive print applied to dibond material to give our booth that extra bit of height to really stand out.

The biggest draw was our 3D carved, milled and hand painted alien prop to showcase our capabilities in custom 3D work.

Sign Expo Canada 2016-7

Our booth was a huge hit drawing crowds of people consistently, on Friday afternoon our very own Elliott O’Brien gave a talk about Up-time and Serviceability of our LED modules that was well attended and well received.

Designated Survivor TSA and Billboard

This fall, one of the most highly anticipated shows of the 2016 TV season started it’s series premier. Designated Survivor which airs on CTV Canada is the story of a low level member of the Cabinet (Kiefer Sutherland) is suddenly forced into the Presidency after a major terrorist attack wipes out the entire cabinet and the president/vice president.

We at Media Resources are excited to watch this exciting new show, but we were even more excited when Bell Media asked us if we could design, build and install a smaller version of The White House for a show promotion on a downtown Toronto transit shelter, as well as create a super board for a 3D Billboard execution.

A custom 3d fabricated billboard in toronto canada

Complete with a roof, pillars and a Presidential seal that lights up at night this TSA was definitely a fun and challenging project that we were very excited to work with.

Thanks to our friends at Bell Media for the opportunity and make sure to check out Designated Survivor on CTV

Media Resources Builds New Oshawa Generals Scoreboard

State of the Art digital sports scoreboard designed, built and installed by Media Resources for the Oshawa Generals OHL hockey team in the GM Centre in Oshawa Ontario.

Back in April 2016 the Oshawa Generals and the City of Oshawa announced that they will be releasing a Request for Quotations for a new state of the art sports scoreboard system for the GM Centre and the Oshawa Generals OHL team.

The announcement states:

“This is an exciting time for the Oshawa Generals organization and our fans. We have been working with the City of Oshawa over the last few months to come to an agreement to have a new video scoreclock in place for the 2016/2017 season. We have the best fans in Canadian Hockey League who have continued to support us through this journey; this gives us the opportunity to provide them with the best game day experience possible,” said Rocco Tullio, President and Governor, Oshawa General Hockey Club. “This puts us one step closer to being able to submit a bid, to be a host city for a Memorial Cup. It took an incredible partnership between the Oshawa Generals, City of Oshawa and General Motors Centre to make this a reality.”

Media Resources quickly got to work on our quotation and in July of 2016 we got the news that we had won the bid to build and install this incredible state of the art digital sports scoreboard using our VisioniQ Sports Scoreboard System.

Media Resources¹ VisioniQ Sports Scoreboard System

This particular installation includes a 4-sided centre hung scoreboard features four 11’x16′ 5.2mm video screens, an upper illuminated advertising ring and four corner identification/sponsor ad units, a beautiful 5.2mm lower ring, 360 degree cameras, GOBO lighting, and a completely redesigned front end control room with state of the art software.

“The City of Oshawa, Oshawa Generals, and Spectra Venue Management selected Media Resources to design, manufacture, install, configure, and service a state of the art video scopeboard system for the General Motors Centre.  We selected Media Resources based on their experience across a board range of projects, the obvious high quality of their product and attention to detail, competitive pricing, and their ability to offer a complete turnkey solution utilizing their in-house team of professionals.

Once they were selected, Media Resources was excellent to work with providing ideas, sound recommendations and solutions over and above our initial expectations. They completed the entire project on time and have been available every step of the way.  Once installed, they helped to train us on the custom software, on the use of the video display system, and have been present at our initial games to ensure everything went smoothly.  The 5.2mm 4-sided display with matching lower video ring is simply stunning; and the City, Team and fans love it!  We could not be more pleased with the results”

 – Vincent Vella, General Manager GM Centre

This amazing, high resolution sports scoreboard made its debut on Friday September 30th at the 2016 Oshawa Generals Home opener against the Peterborough Petes.

The LED Screens on the VISIONiQ system are capable of displaying all forms of digital content: from text and graphics to full-motion video in an extraordinary range of colours that can change at a moment’s notice.

Powered by our proprietary VISIONiQ technology the LED modules allow for a hassle free installation and maintenance of each panel which comes fully equipped with its own diagnostic software for around-the-clock monitoring. Waterproof cabling and cabinet construction, ensures your product is protected against the harshest of elements.

A Busy Week at Media Resources

It has been a very busy week for the employees and partners of Media Resources, let’s recap all that’s been going on.

1 – Cycling Across Canada for Cancer Awareness and Charity

One of the 4 partners of Media Resources and his daughter returned this week from their cross Canada cycling tour with the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. They rode in teams all the way from the west coast to the east coast and they raised literally thousands of dollars in the process. You can read all about their experience on their blog at the link below, Media Resources is a proud sponsor of the event and we could not be more proud of Jeff and Brooklyn for all that they do!
We will have a full recap and video of this to show you next week, it’s very inspiring!

2 – Media Resources Attending Trade Shows

We attended two major trade shows, one being Sign Expo Canada in Mississauga and the second being the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas.

At Sign Expo Canada our massive 20’x40′ booth won the best booth award and we are extremely happy for that recognition. This booth had 3D elements, a large printed floor that looked like the surface of the moon and multiple LED screens in various pixel pitches, the largest at 10’x20′ which was the talk of the show.  The booth was a great representation of the quality of our product offerings from highest quality LED screens to crystal clear print in large and small format and custom 3D fabrication.

In Las Vegas we showed our products and capabilities to owners and executives of casinos all across North America, with our extensive experience and background working with the Fallsview Casino and Seneca Casino we were very happy to be so well received at the Gaming expo

Thanks to everyone who came by the booths and spoke with our Sales team and Project Managers.

A Recap of a busy week in the life of Media Resources, sign industry trade shows, installing LED signs, riding bikes across Canada and building scoreboards

3 – Sign Installations, All Day, Every Day!

This week our sign installation teams were as busy as ever with over 40 sign installations in the schedule!  One of those jobs was a beautiful 20 foot tall 3.9mm LED display in Canada’s 4th largest mall – the Yorkdale Mall in Toronto, Ontario

4 – Work Hard and Play Hard

Finally, after a long and busy week of working hard – tonight we will play hard!
Media Resources was very lucky months ago to be given the task of building a new scoreboard for the Oshawa Generals in the GM Centre arena in Oshawa, Ontario.  Tonight is the Home Opener for the Oshawa Generals and the official unveiling of the new state of the art digital scoreboard, so tonight we’re travelling in style to the Shwa’ in an extended bus limo to catch the game in a luxury box.  We’ve invited everyone who worked on the project to see the end result of weeks and weeks of hard work and long days, we can’t wait to see it!

Installing a digital billboard

Building and Installing a Digital LED Billboard

Building and Installing a Digital LED Billboard

Designing, engineering, building and installing a digital LED billboard is no small task and at Media Resources we do it all from scratch from sizing and cutting the metal work to piecing the whole thing together, without the use of welding to all of the electical wiring and programming the LED components.  If that wasn’t enough we also make sure the entire unit is sealed tight and waterproofed, that the LED components are perfectly lined up and the whole unit is put together and tested right in our warehouse.  Then, we take it all apart and prep it for shipping, we load it safely onto a transport truck and we follow it to it’s new home and we install the whole thing.

What you, the consumer see’s when you drive by one of these huge LED billboards is all just the icing on the cake, below we will take you through the steps required to design, engineer, build and install a 14×48 foot long digital LED Billboard.

Custom extrusions are shipped to Media Resources from the supplier and stored until needed for a new build, at which time they are carefully inspected before production begins. Since Media Resources uses an extrusion-based construction we use this CNC saw to perform any end cuts and miters. An operator programs angles and dimensions and the machine is able to make 2 simultaneous cuts on both ends with incredible accuracy and speed. This greatly improves production throughput and consistency.

The frames are then laid out and assembled with a number of dimensional checks along the way. We use a number of jigs and clamps to ensure straightness and square-ness of the entire frame. This is critical as even the smallest mis-dimensions can affect the visual quality of an LED display.

Building and installing a digital led billboard

The Media Resources VISIONiQ large frame system, colloquially referred to as “Big Iron”, requires absolutely no welding or drilling in its construction. This mitigates any potential quality defects due to the high craftsmanship requirement of welding or other human error. To create very long lengths, we use a combination of bolted plates and acrylic adhesive at the splice points, guaranteeing that these become actually the strongest parts of the section; this has been a known failure point in competitor’s systems.

Building and installing a digital led billboard

While our metalworking team is constructing the frame, our router team will be cutting faceplates and other auxiliary components using our CNC router. The faceplates will eventually hold the VISIONiQ modules. Because the faceplates are identical, the router team is able to build up a reserve of pieces so production is able to flow.

Building and installing a digital led billboard

Once the faceplates are cut and finished they are placed onto the box, aligned with a special jig and riveted into the extrusion frame. Rivet chases in the extrusion frame gather the rivets and position the faceplates automatically for a precise fit.

After the metalwork assembly is complete, a full inspection guarantees the frame is ready for population. The frame is then mounted to a moveable bracket system with castors that doubles as a shipping bracket. The population team then installs the LED modules, places power and control components, routes and connects cables/wiring, installs cabinet doors and hooks up the unit for test. Specialists then produce and install the networking and computing equipment into the door-mounted compartments.

Building and installing a digital led billboard

With all the assembly complete and subsystems tested, the entire board, sometimes produced in multiple sections, is fitment tested on our lifting gantries. Every board undergoes a high-power “burn-in” session of a minimum 48 hours to ensure that weaker components are “shaken out” before leaving the plant. Finally the board is inspected for visual quality and calibrated for colour accuracy.

Building and installing a digital led billboard

With testing complete and having been inspected my multiple levels of experts and management we disassemble the construction and slowly and carefully load the components onto the truck for shipping and delivery.

Building and installing a digital led billboard

Once on-site, the full size digital bulletin is lifted from the truck and quickly assembled on the ground before being lifted in a single piece. The Media Resources “Big Iron” system can be safely lifted with a two-point pick up with no spreader bar.

Building and installing a digital led billboard

Once lifted, the board is rested on its ledger brackets at the bottom, and a number of clamping features grip the steel I-beams to secure it in place. Finally, once electrical is hooked up and the onboard cellular modem makes its connection to the internet, the board is operational and generating revenue on the very same day.

Nordstroms Toronto 3D Transit Shelter Ad

Media Resources Builds and Installs 3D Transit Shelter for Nordstroms Toronto Grand Opening

Every company wants their advertising message to stand out and capture the attention of the consumer, with so much available to distract pedestrians more and more companies are turning to 3D fabrication and creative outdoor advertising to display their messages.

For the September 2016 launch of Nordstroms at the Toronto Eaton Centre, the fashion retail giant turned to Out of Home advertising to promote the launch.  In partnership with Astral Media, Media Resources was asked to create and install large 3D lettering as well as three transparent window graphics to compliment the print transit ad at Yonge and Dundas Square in Toronto.

The large 3D letters spelled out “YOU FIRST” which is how Nordstroms describes their “…commitment to people, service and style in a really big way, every day”

Using high density foam and a 3D Hot Wire carving machine Media Resources carved out the letters and then painted and treated them, followed by prepping the letters to be mounted atop the transit shelter.

Media Resources Featured in Sign Media Magazine

Media Resources Featured in Sign Media Magazine for 50th Anniversary

As Media Resources Inc celebrates our 50th year in the business, we were given the opportunity to be featured in a special anniversary issue of Sign Media Magazine, who also happen to be celebrating a milestone anniversary this year.

You can read the original article at this link: Sign Media/Sign Shop Profile: Media Resources International

Or, you can read it right here!

Media Resources International (MRI), now celebrating its 50th anniversary, has evolved significantly throughout the years under the guidance of Keith Edwards who is currently its co-owner and chief operating officer (COO). His older brother Grant registered the company as Grant Sign Services back in 1966 and got it up and running in 1967, specializing in sign installation and maintenance. Edwards joined a few years later, in 1972, and eventually became general manager (GM) in 1990 after his brother got out of the business.

Now, MRI not only installs and maintains signs, but also designs, prints and fabricates items that are used in various aspects of the sign industry.

“We’ve come a long way,” says Edwards, “from a small installation company of three people in 1967 to a national company with more than 180 employees today.”

Large format printing sign fabrication and sign installation

Investing in growth

When Grant exited the business, he sold it to Robert J. Deluce, now best-known as president and CEO of Porter Airlines.

“I worked for Bob as GM for 10 years and learned a lot,” says Edwards, “but he didn’t want to invest in the further growth of the company. In late 1999, I decided I wanted to buy it back. I worked with two silent partners to help finance the deal and then we really ramped up the business. In our first year, we went from having about 13 employees to 35, bought new equipment and more than doubled our sales. It was mainly a matter of getting additional work from our existing customers, as we had the capacity to do so.”

In addition to growing in scale, the company grew in the diversity of its products and services. By way of example, one of Edwards’ business partners, Steve Gallow, had a background in large-format printing and led an effort in 2003 and 2004 to expand MRI into that field. (The other silent partner was Cal Courneya, whose background was in out-of-home (OOH) advertising with MediaCom. He has since retired, selling his shares to Jeff Rushton.)

“Being an installation company, we used to receive graphics printed by other companies,” Edwards explains, “but if they were printed wrong or delivered late, we got blamed. So by printing them ourselves instead, we could fix any problems better and faster.”

Large format sign fabrication and sign installation

Under the oversight of Will Thomson, the 4th partner of the current ownership team at MRI, the 15 person print team at MRI continues to print approximately 200,000 square feet of graphics per month. A large percentage of their work is for high-resolution outdoor billboards, but they also print at higher resolutions on acrylic, polycarbonates and glass up to 1,440 DPI using both solvent-based and ultraviolet-curing (UV-curing) inkjet printers.

In 2005, MRI bought a manufacturer whose tri-vision signs it had previously installed and serviced. Rebranded as Rite Sign International, it became a highly successful division of the company.

“We started making these signs here and got to approximately 95 per cent market share in Canada,” says Edwards. “It was a great business for us.”

A similar move into large-scale light-emitting diode (LED) displays involved a sales agreement and partnership with U.S.-based Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO) in 2009 and the eventual acquisition of Hamilton Digital Designs (HDD), based in Burlington, Ont., in 2011.

“We started developing new LED systems after buying HDD, as then we had the financing and personnel to make it happen,” says Edwards. “We modified colour positioning to optimize the screens’ horizontal and vertical viewing angles, sourced more efficient and powerful LEDs and angled them downward to reduce the waste of light spillage upward. We may not be as big as Daktronics or Watchfire, but we run head-to-head with them and about 60 per cent of our sales are in the U.S., where they’re based.”

Digital led signage

Grant’s name stayed on the company during the first few years of its new co-ownership structure, but was soon no longer suitable for the growing mix of services and products.

“Our divisions all had different names,” Edwards explains, “so we held a contest within the company to come up with one brand for everything we did. That was how we rebranded as “Media Resources International…solutions for the sign industry”

Added dimensions

MRI’s current mix of services includes large-format digital printing, custom LED Display fabrication as well as the production of large LED displays, such as scoreboards. The company’s clients include OOH firms, on-premise sign manufacturers, advertising agencies, real estate developers, arenas and highway billboards.

“Installation and maintenance is still a large portion of what we do, comprising about 50 per cent of our overall business,” Edwards says, “then five per cent is printing and the other 45 per cent is LED digital billboards and displays, but this is growing at a rapid rate.”

Over the past few years, MRI has also developed a reputation for the specialized fabrication and installation of large three-dimensional larger than life props for the OOH industry. In 2014, for example, Pattison Outdoor launched a Coca-Cola billboard in Vancouver and Toronto to coincide with the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Both billboards were updated with a tally of Team Canada’s medals.

Olympics Medals Sochi Billboard

The project was a runner-up in the 2014 National Sign Competition’s OOH category, beaten only by a fellow MRI-made stunt—a giant Mike’s Hard Lemonade can that was installed along Toronto’s Yonge Street in the summer of 2013.

More recently, the company developed a giant roulette wheel for Clear Channel Outdoor, advertising Fallsview Casino of Niagara Falls, Ont., to people passing by Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square.

yonge and dundas casino roulette

“Computer-aided design (CAD) technology has made this kind of work quicker and more affordable than it used to be,” says Edwards. “We’ve invested in more computer numerical control (CNC) cutters for working with foam, as we’ve been inundated with this type of work and still don’t have enough people to handle the demand. It’s a niche where we’ve done a great job at marketing.”

The LED display business is also growing for MRI.

“We’re good at creating custom digital billboards, but in the last 18 months, we’ve also seen more and more indoor LED display projects come along,” says Edwards. “They’ve quickly grown from a very small portion to about 10 per cent of our work. We can get down to a pixel pitch of 1.7 mm (67 mil), which looks clear from about 3 to 4 m (10 to 13 ft) away.”

A longer reach

In 2010, MRI’s headquarters (HQ) moved from Mississauga, Ont., to a fully owned 5,574-m2 (60,000-sf) building in neighbouring Oakville. This centre of operations is also complemented by smaller facilities in Richmond, B.C., Edmonton and Calgary, along with sales offices throughout North America. And to back up its claim as Canada’s only national sign installation company, MRI operates more than 100 installation and service vehicles.

Media resources exterior

“Back in the 1970s when I joined the industry, large sign companies had their own trucks,” Edwards explains. “Nowadays, most of them have gotten out of the installation business. And no OOH firms do their own maintenance. The costs of the vehicles have gone way up and you have to roll them over pretty quickly to keep your fleet viable. So we pride ourselves on taking on that work for the trade. We’re a partner to them, not a competitor.”

And in the LED display business, MRI’s reach extends not only throughout the U.S., but also into South America into markets like Peru and Argentina, where it has worked with local OOH firms.

Nevertheless, MRI remains committed to its roots in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). In 2015, the company won an Oakville Award for Business Excellence. It was named the town’s Large Business of the Year in recognition of its track record of growth, innovation and community activities.

“Having been with the company for 45 years and an owner with some great partners for 16 years,” Edwards says, “I’m truly proud of MRI and can say it is one of a kind in our industry, we’ve got a dedicated team of over 185 of the best damn staff in the sign industry. At MRI, safety always comes first and after that everything else just falls into place, we take care of each other, we take care of our staff and we take care of our customers.

Building a 14 x 48 Digital LED Billboard

The last few weeks in the Media Resources North American production facility have seen a mad fury of activity as our teams all work together to build, program, construct, test, retest, deconstruct and ship a larger than life 14×48 digital LED billboard.

Here are a handful of photos of the final stages as we test and tear down and then package to ship this massive piece to it’s final destination.

After a drive of over 20 hours to the boards new home in Shreveport, Louisiana our road weary installation crew got right to work inspecting, unpacking and installing this mammoth piece of technology.

The Moment of Truth

After careful inspection and installation of this huge digital LED billboard it was time to load in the content and make sure everything worked as it should.

Success!

After months of planning and testing the Media resources team installed successfully the world’s first 400mmx400mm VISIONiQ Highway Digital LED System in Shreveport, Louisiana and most importantly our customer, Lamar Advertising was thrilled with the results!

Texting and Driving Billboard Makes News

Texting and Driving Billboard Makes News

Media Resources Texting and Driving Billboard Project Making news

A powerful anti texting and driving billboard that Media Resources worked on is making big news this week!

A giant billboard for a funeral home that can be seen from the Gardiner Expressway is actually a texting-and-driving PSA in disguise.

The grim ad seems to encourage drivers to text and drive, suggesting that it would drum up business for the Wathan Funeral Home.

But the Wathan Funeral Home doesn’t exist. It does have a website, which explains the campaign.

“You probably came to this website to tell us what horrible people we are for running an ad like that. And you’d be right. It is a horrible thing for a funeral home to do. But we’re not a funeral home,” the website reads.

“We’re just trying to get Canadians to stop texting and driving, which is projected to kill more people in Ontario this year than drinking and driving. That’s right. More.”

Digital LED signage to refresh Fallsview Casino

Media Resources is excited to be in the casino business again with Niagara Fallsview

Casino. The Niagara Falls landmark is set to install new LED signage standing 13 stories tall to share messaging of events and casino information.

With a goal of being clearly visible from both the Canadian and United States sides of the falls, the new state of the art LED signage will be a twin in size to its 130 foot tall by 20 foot wide but will offer considerably more flexibility to the original.

Will Thomson, a Partner with Media Resources states that “Evolutions in LED technologies are helping to drive marketing messaging forward for events centres like Fallsview Casino. We are excited to help them reach more customers in real time with their current products and services. The display we are building is one of the large LED screens in the world being a three sides that is over 104 feet tall. We are very proud to be partnering with Fallsview Casino and the Ontario Lottery Corporation on this spectacular LED display.”

This isn’t the first project Media Resources has done with Fallsview Casino. Custom designed and fabricated 3D installations such as Bring Your Luck  and climbing 3D poker chips in Toronto’s Yonge Dundas Square have been successful at bringing business to the Niagara Falls landmark as well as outdoor advertising awards.

The display used Media Resources Vision iQ LED display technology that incorporates multiple layers of redundancy and diagnostics to ensure the display remains up and running for a long period of time.

This same technology has been used in 100’s of other installations across Canada, the United States, Australia and South America.
